Dzongri Trek
One of the most popular trekking destinations in the entire state of Sikkim is undoubtedly Dzongri. With an altitude of 4,200 meters above sea level, this trekking route is full of fascinating views and tantalizing tourist attractions. From the top of Dzongri, you will be rewarded with a surreal panoramic view of the snowy peaks of the Himalayan range.
Dzongri trek is usually the short trekking option of Goechala Trek. The trek begins from the base of Yuksom and within 5 days, it ends at Yuksom. In short, for those who want to explore more in a short duration, Dzongri Trek is truly the ideal one that is worth trying.
Attractions on Dzongri Trek
Yuksom: Sikkim’s first capital Yuksom is the starting point of the Dzongri Trek. It also acts as a base camp for many other mountain expeditions. The popular century-old Dubdi Monastery is the major attraction of Yksom.
Bakhim: After covering the trekking distance of 16 km, you will come across Bakhim. The view of the mountains is quite astonishing. You will also get to see a trekkers’ hut here.
Tshoka: At an elevation of 300 feet above sea level, Tshoka is a little Refugee settlement and the first trekking destination from Yuksom. It is the ideal place to enjoy a breathtaking sunrise looming over Mt. Pandim.
Thansing: From Tshoka, you can go for a one-day trek to Thansing. The view of Mt. Pandim and Narsing is truly a treat to the eyes. However, you can also skip visiting this destination.
Goecha La: It is one of the highest mountain passes in the world. This is the place from where you will get to see the sweeping view of Pandim, Kanchendzonga, North and South Kabru, TalungRathong, Kokthang, Black Kabru, Kabru Dome, Gocha Peak, TalungRathong, etc.
Best Time to Go for Yuksom to Dzongri Trek
The best time to go for the Yuksom to Dzongri Trek is the summer between mid-March and June mid. After that, you can also go for a trek here in the autumn from mid-September till November.
Trekking is not recommended here in the months from the of end June to mid-September when monsoon strikes. The trekking route becomes quite slippery and muddy. Landslides are also a normal occurrence as a result the roads get blocked frequently.
Summer: The season of summer ranges from May to June when the temperature ranges from 15°C to 25°C during the day. However, at night, the temperature falls quite significantly; ranging from 8°C to 15°C.
Winter: In the winter season, you can expect the temperature to fall sharply. At night, the temperature can even go below -20°C. The months of January and February are the coolest and hence, conducting a trek is not possible. Occasionally some expeditions can be organized with experienced mountaineering guides.
Autumn: From mid-September to the end of October, autumn can be seen dominating in this region. The temperature throughout the day varies from 13°C to 20°C. However, at Dzongri, you can expect the temperature to be 3 °C to -7 °C in the day and 3°C to -4°C in the night.
