Kabi Lungchok

Kabi Lungchok, an offbeat destination of Sikkim

Kabi Lungchok also spelled as Kabi Longtsok is an archival spot that falls under the forested area in Kabi, a serene village located in North Sikkim. Not more than a 19 km driving distance away from the capital city of Gangtok, it takes only 45 minutes to reach this historical place. It is the very place where the indigenous Lepcha Tribe and the migrated Bhutias from Tibet had sworn as "Blood Brotherhood" to make sure that the two tribes live harmoniously in Sikkim in the years to come.

Kabi Lungchok History

According to the ancient legend, in the 13th century, A.D. Kye Bumsa- the prince of Bhutuias from the Minyak House in Kham in Eastern Tibet and Thekong Tek- the religious chief of the Lepchas along with their followers had gathered at this spot where they swear for the two races to be in blood brotherhood.

They call upon all the powerful spirits of the valley to a witness this historical event when these two tribes had sworn to be in blood brotherhood until river Rangeet stops flowing and the mighty Kanchenjunga ceased to exist. They drowned their feet in a vessel full of animal blood and erected a stone here as a mark of this significant historical event. And, because of this, the people of Sikkim consider it a sacred religious place.

Attractions and Activities

The entrance to this sacred religious site is located by the roadside of Kabi Village. After walking through the entry gate, you will come across a stoned pathway surrounded by forest. This pathway will lead you to the main spot within 5 minutes. Nestled amidst the forest, this place is elevated a little and has a large statue erected in the middle of it. The statue consists of the figures of Khye Bumsa, Thekong Tek, and his wife.

The entire place is not well-maintained. And, as a result, most of the tourists do not prefer to include it in their holiday itinerary during their trip to North Sikkim. If you have decided to visit this place, just ask your driver to stop here so that you can spend some time wandering around this place prior to resuming your journey towards North Sikkim again.
