Legship  Sikkim, an offbeat destination of Sikkim

Replete with an abundance of natural beauty, Legship is a small town in the Western part of Sikkim. Nestled beside the shimmering RangeetRiver, the town is often described as the gateway of Sikkim as it falls on the way to many breathtaking tourist destinations in Sikkim.

Known for its ancient spiritual and historical significance, this town, along with its multiple temples, hot springs, monasteries, and breathtaking scenic views, is certainly a great holiday destination for every kind of traveller.

Places to Visit around Legship

Legship in West Sikkim has some notable attractions to visit. Here are some of the prominent attractions:

Rangeet Water World

Constructed on the Rangeet River Dam, Rangeet Water World is a pictorial site. The entire area of the dam is around 979 sq km. Located on the reservoir of this dam, the water world will let you have an adventurous journey. The children will also love spending time here. However, there is an entry fee required to enter here and it stays open every day in a week. Rangit Water World opens at 9:00 am and closes at 6:30 pm.

KirateshwarMahadev Temple

Dedicated to Lord Shiba, KirateshwarMahadev Temple is a must-visit religious site in Legship. This Hindu sacred site is one of the oldest in the region and is located on the riverbank of Rangeet. It is believed that if someone prays in front of this temple, their wishes do come true. Most of the devotees also visit the temple because its premises house three separate platforms to pray to Durga, Shree Ram, and Lord Shiva. In Mahabharat, there is a mention of this temple as it had great importance in this epic battle.

This renowned temple, painted mostly in yellow is also famous for the BalaChaturdashi festival which is organized from November to December. MahaShivaratri is celebrated here too during the months of February and March. During these months, a large number of tourists can be seen flocking here in this temple. Surrounded by forest and hills, it is an ideal place to recharge your mind and cut off from the chaotic outside world.

LhoKhando Sang Pho Caves

Located in Legship in West Sikkim, LhoKhando Sang Pho is one of the sacred caves in Sikkim where Guru Rinpoche, a prominent Buddhist saint of India meditated in the 8th century. Because of its intense religious significance, the cave is quite popular among the followers of Buddhism as well as tourists. Overlooking the glittering river Rangeet, this is undoubtedly a perfect pilgrimage site where visitors can meditate and enjoy the view of the surrounding lush greenery and the hills.

Phu Cha Chu

Phu Cha Chu, the Sulphurous Hot Spring is a popular site in Legship. Surrounded by the thick alpine forest all around, this hot spring has curative properties. Overlooking the snaking Rangit River, taking a bath in this hot spring provides refreshments to your mind, body, and soul. It is also believed that, in the 7th century, the great Guru Padmasambhava meditated at the surrounding rock of this hot spring.

How to Reach

By Air: Bagdogra in Siliguri, West Bengal is the nearest airport at a distance of around 118 km from Legship. The city is approximately 4 hours' driving distance away from the airport.

By Road: Shared Taxis or even buses can be taken from Gangtok to reach this city. Private taxis are available also from other major cities like Siliguri. The approximate distance from Gangtok to Legship is around 105 km.

By Train: NJP is the nearest airport at a distance of around 112 km from Legship. This railhead is connected with all the cities of India. Hence, you will not face any problems while reaching NJP and then to this city.

Best Time to Visit Legship

You can have a tour of Legship at any time of the year due to its friendly weather. However, if you talk about the peak season, the best time to visit Legship is from February to May and then again from September to December. The temperature of the city is mostly cold throughout the year but not too extreme and unbearable. The sky remains clear too. Hence, you can expect to get a view of the hills and the surroundings all the time.
