Nimachen

Nimachen, an offbeat destination of Sikkim

Nimachen is a lesser-known tiny village in the Silk Route region. Not more than 13 km from Rongli and 15 km from Zuluk, it is a splendid settlement enclosed by the dense forest. Situated on a hill slope and at an elevation of 7800 feet above sea level, Nimachen never fails to mesmerize visitors with its intense natural beauty.

What Makes Nimachen Worth Visiting?

Throughout the year Nimachen experiences very pleasant weather which makes the place a perfect destination to visit. If you want to experience the breathtaking sunrise, sweeping view of the mountains and the hills, and winding roads and valleys of this Silk Route, then staying at Nimachen could be the best choice. This splendid village provides some of the best views of the valleys and luxuriant forests of this part of Sikkim and the Himalayan foothills. It is a bird watchers’ paradise as the forest in this village supports a wide variety of Himalayan birds.

Places to Visit Nimachen

From Nimachen you can explore some of the finest sightseeing spots on the Silk Route. Thambi Viewpoint is just a few kilometre's driving distance away through a winding road via Zuluk. Thambi Viewpoint offers a sweeping view of the entire valley. Situated at an elevation of 11,200 feet above sea level, the viewpoint offers a fascinating sunrise view. Moreover, the panoramic view of the entire eastern Himalayas can be enjoyed from this viewpoint.

Further ahead of Thambi Viewpoint, you will reach Lungthung, another pictorial site situated at an elevation of 13,000 feet above sea level. The serene ambience and the natural beauty make your soul crave more. You can also visit Adi Baba Mandir and Kalpokhari Lake. If you go even further ahead, you will be reaching Kupup Lake and Memenchu Lake. The golf course near Kupup is worth visiting too which is located at an elevation of 13,500 ft. above sea level. Memencho Lake is also known as Elephant Lake as the shape of this lake resembles the shape of an elephant.

How to Reach

By Train: The nearest railhead is New Jalpaiguri Junction at a distance of 135 km which takes around 5 to 6 hours to cover. From NJP, reach Rangpo and then proceed to Nimachen via Rongli.

By Air: Bagdogra Airport is Nimachen’s nearest airport at a distance of around 130 km. From the airport, you will be reaching Nimachen within 5 hours by rented car.

By Road: A bus or taxi service is not available to visit Nimachen. You have to rent a car from its nearby major cities like Gangtok, Siliguri, Bagdogra and more.

Best Time to Visit Nimachen

The best time to visit Sikkim is either between March and May or October and mid-December. During these months, the weather of Nimachen stays quite pleasing, the sky remains clear as a result you can enjoy the splendid view of the mountain peaks. The season of winter can be extremely cold here. Hence, if you are travelling during the months of winter, don’t forget to bring warm clothes along with you.
