Sribadam Sikkim, an offbeat destination of Sikkim

Enclosed with lush green forest, Sribadam or Sreebadam, is a newly discovered village in Sikkim. Being able to escape the clutch of urbanization, Sribadam Village in Sikkim provides a perfect ambience to get rid of the hectic workload of daily life. Situated at an elevation of 2100 meters above the sea level, the hidden hamlet is 82 kilometres away from Gangtok.

In the Limboo (tribe) language, the word Sribadam means open space or flat land. A tiny village with around 3oo families of different communities such as Bhutia, Subba and Gurung, Sri Badam should be in your next holiday list and in the following lines let us describe why.

What to See in and around Sribadam

Considered to be an ideal destination for having inner peace, there are a plethora of things to see in the village and they are as mentioned below.

  • Phuntsok Choeling Monastery, quite renowned for its meditation centre which cures any kind of ailment by religious ritual and practices.
  • Nyingmapa Palyul Dechen Gawelling Monastery and its famous Phurpa Tordo Puja and Cham Dance (Mask Dance). These festivals are organised in the month of December.
  • There are two picturesque lakes in the village named Bhaishi Pokhori, Jhor Pokhori. Bhaishi Pokhori is considered to be a sacred lake situated in the forest of the village. Whereas Jhor Pokhori is full of fishes but fishing is not allowed.
  • Woodwork Industry at the village where Thockchi, Table, Holy seat for Rimpoches are manufactured.
  • The waterfalls of Sribadam and the wildlife Sanctuary blessed with unique flora and fauna.
  • The distinctive 17 stairs leading to Jhandi Dara in the middle of Sribadam forest which was constructed during the British period.

  • Visit all the nearby monasteries to meditate and worship the Lord, Buddha.
  • Trek to the famous Barsey Rhodendron Sanctuary though the trekking trail covered with dense vegetation from both side.
  • Participate in the mask dance or Cham dance at Nyingmapa Palyul Dechen Gaweiling if you visit the village during December.
  • Village Walking, Bird Watching, angling, picnicking, Mountain Biking, etc can be done in Sribadam Village.
  • Relish the beauty of the magnificent sunrise looming over the mountain peaks.

How to Reach Sribadam in West Sikkim

Being well connected by road, you can reach Sribadam from most of the nearby towns. Hired cars are available to take you from NJP, Siliguri or even Bagdogra to Sribadam via Darjeeling - Jorethang - Soreng or via Melli - Jorethang - Soreng.

The village only offers homestay facility when it comes about accommodation. Few homestays run by the local Bhutia families provide great accommodation at the affordable price. Moreover, all the basic facilities are there in the homestay.

Best Time to Visit Sribadam in Sikkim

Those who want to enjoy trout fishing and want to meditate in the monasteries can visit the village during Monsoon. To get a splendid view of the Mountain Peaks, October to mid-May is the best time. However, to participate in Cham dance and the Phurpa Tordo Puja, one can visit the village during December.
