South Khayerbari also known as South Khairbari situated along the banks of River Torsha is a unique nature park of Dooars Region. Located at a distance of 12km from Hasimara Railway Station and 18km from Madarihat, South Khayerbari is a Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre for felines. After the ban on the use of animals in circus forest officials rescued several animals including 11 Royal Bengal Tigers from Olympic Circus. Later, all the 11 Royal Bengal Tiger were transferred in South Khayerbari. Famously known as Leopard and Royal Bengal Tiger Rescue Centre, South Khayerbari has become a prominent attraction for nature lover traveling to Dooars Region. South Khayerbari with its rescued felines and scenic beauty has become one of the favored tourist attractions in Dooars.

Being a famous tourist destination of Dooars, the forest official has built Forest Cottages in South Khayerbari. The cottages in South Khayerbari are maintained by the West Bengal Forest Department Corporation (WBFDC). There are three forest cottages in South Khayerbari. The govt. cottages of South Khayerbari are situated along the banks of Buri Torsha River. Located near the premises of South Khayerbari Nature Park, staying in the WBFDC Cottages of South Khayerbari is the best way to get an insight in the lives of rescued felines. There are many things to do while lodging in South Khayerbari.

Things To Do In South Khayerbari

South Khayerbari Rescue Centre comprise of 5 units. Each unit consists of 3 cells where the rescued felines are kept. Tours are operated in the battery operated car where tourists get to observe the leopards and tigers in their semi–natural habitat. Apart from observing the rescued feline tourist during their stay in South Khayerbari can also go for boating in South Khayerbari Nature Park. Since South Khayerbari is located along the banks of River Torsha boating is one of the favored tourist activities. Jungle Safari in Jaldapara National is another favored thing to do in South Khayerbari. As the distance between Jaldapara National and South Khayerbari is only 15km.

Best Time To Visit South Khayerbari

South Khayerbari is one of the few places in Dooars region which can be visited throughout the year. Unlike other forested area of Dooars like Gorumara National Park, and Jaldapara National Park, South Khayerbari does not remain closed during monsoon season.

The closest railway station from South Khayerbari is located in Hasimara. The distance between Hasimara Railway Station and South Khayerbari is 12km. The closest airport to South Khayerbari is in Bagdogra and the distance between South Khayerbari and Bagdogra is 160km. Visitors can easily hire a car from Bagdogra or rent a car from NJP to reach South Khayerbari.
