Tarey Bhir
At an elevation of 10,000 feet above sea level in South Sikkim, Tarey Bhir is a pictorial landscape. It is a breathtaking cliff overlooking the lower ranges of Darjeeling and Kalimpong. Nestled in a small hamlet named Sadam, Tarey Bhir View Point should be on your holiday itinerary list if you are planning to visit South Sikkim.
The word "Bhir" is a Nepalese word that means cliff. Due to its high elevation, this scenic cliff offers a fascinating view of the river valleys, the surrounding lush green forest, hills, and the panoramic view of the confluence of Teesta and Rangeet Rivers. Moreover, the gardens of Peshok sprawled on a sloppy hill can also be seen from Tarey Bhir.
Attractions and Activities
From Namchi, the journey to Tarey Bhir is the most thrilling one. To get there, rent a car that goes towards Sadam from Namchi. On the way, the road will split into two and your driver has to take the route that goes towards the right. The approximate distance from Namchi to Tarey Bhir is around 16km.
You will walk through the paved pathway that goes downhill. The beautiful pathway is built on the top of the mountain. On the one side, you will get to see the thickly wooded forest of pine tree, and on the other, a green carpet of grass and moss. The pathway looks like the Great Wall of China. This walkway will lead you to the edge of a cliff from where you will be prized with the tantalizing view of the Himalayan range, the hills of Darjeeling and Kalimpong, and the confluence of River Teesta and Rangeet.
How to Reach
By Air: The nearest airport is Bagdogra in West Bengal. The approximate distance is 102 km from Namchi. Bagdogra is actually a domestic airport and is connected to the nearest international airport Kolkata. Tarey Bhir viewpoint is approximately 16 km driving distance away from Namchi.
By Train: The nearest Railhead is New Jalpaiguri Junction (NJP) in West Bengal. The approximate distance between NJP and Namchi is about 96 km. Cars are available to hire from NJP railway station.
By Road: The distance from Siliguri to Nachi is around 92 km. The Sikkim Nationalised Transport (SNT) buses ply regularly from Namchi to towns within the state and also from Siliguri. If you want comfort, you can even hire private cars.
Best Time to Visit Tarey Bhir
You can visit Sikkim as well as Tarey Bhir anytime during the months of March to May and then again from September to November. The weather is quite enjoyable throughout these months with clear and sunny days. However, the months of December and February are usually very cold. Hence, most of the tourists do not prefer to visit there. May to August is a monsoon here when it experiences heavy rainfall and makes the pathway of Tarey Bhir slippery and somewhat dangerous.
