If you're looking for a peaceful entry into the lap of nature, Buxa and Jayanti in the Dooars region of West Bengal is the perfect destination for you. These places aren't just destinations, but experiences filled with history, wildlife, and peaceful river views. Whether you're into jungle adventures or simply want a break from city life, Buxa and Jayanti welcome you with open arms.
Located in the Alipurduar district, this region is home to the famous Buxa Tiger Reserve and the scenic village of Jayanti by the Jayanti River. It also shares a border with Bhutan, adding a rich cultural flavor to your travels.
Here are some must-visit spots you won't want to miss on your trip to Buxa and Jayanti.
Covering over 760 sq. km, this reserve is full of wildlife. If you're lucky, you might spot a Royal Bengal Tiger, elephants, or Indian bison. The dense forests and rolling hills also make it a great place for treks and birdwatching.
Situated about 867 meters above sea level, the old Buxa Fort played an important role in history. The Bhutanese used to rule this fort, which later became a British prison. You'll need to take a trek from the zero point to experience both the history and the beautiful views.
Jayanti village is situated beside the gently flowing Jayanti River. It's no wonder people call it the 'Queen of Dooars.' Take a walk along the riverbank, enjoy the peaceful ambiance, and soak in the beauty around you.
A short hike through the forest will take you to Pokhri Hill, where you'll find a holy pond filled with turtles and fish. The Lepcha tribes and other locals believe the pond is sacred. It's a peaceful trek-ideal if you enjoy light adventure with a touch of spiritual charm.
Rajabhatkhawa is a small village, traditionally the starting point for entering the Buxa Tiger Reserve. It used to have a forest checkpost where tourists would collect their entry passes, but nowadays, no tickets are required at the Rajabhatkhawa Checkpost. Make sure to stop by the Nature Interpretation Centre to learn about the local ecosystem or visit the animal rescue center before heading into the forest.
Chota Mahakal and the Mahakal Caves are situated very close to the Jayanti River. These caves are devoted to Lord Shiva. It's a peaceful spiritual spot, surrounded by natural beauty, and often visited by both pilgrims and trekkers. You can even hire local transport to reach Chota Mahakal.
To reach TGN Watchtower, you can hire a local vehicle. If you love panoramic views, this spot should definitely be on your list. The views of the vast forest are stunning, and if you're lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of some wildlife.
Santalabari is where the treks to Buxa Fort and Lepchakha usually start. If you're up for a bit of walking and some beautiful forest trails, this is a great place to begin your adventure.
When it comes to exploring the Buxa Tiger Reserve on a thrilling jungle safari, you've generally got two main starting points to choose from, each offering its own unique flavor of the forest. Opting for the Rajabhatkhawa route often takes you through denser patches of woodland, known for its chances of spotting a wider variety of wildlife, from majestic elephants and gaurs to various deer species and maybe even a lucky glimpse of a leopard. On the other hand, the safari route that begins from Jayanti tends to wind along the scenic Jayanti River, offering stunning views of the surrounding hills and a different kind of beauty. This route is particularly rewarding for birdwatchers and often provides opportunities to see different types of wildlife that frequent the riverine areas. So, depending on what you're hoping to experience most, you can choose the safari that best suits your interests!
We offer a mix of options, depending on your taste and budget. Expect clean, comfortable places near nature, like forest bungalows or friendly homestays. Specific stay info will be in your tour plan.
